Freud invented it practically invented, and Oprah made a career out of it, but not everyone hugs their way to mental health. The role that culture plays to determine if the treatment is successful or not, prompted the UC Irvine researchers to study a popular psychotherapy tool: expressive writing.
Practice encourages patients to bring thoughts and feelings into words about traumatic events in order to relieve stress and promote physical health. Researchers Eric Knowles and Belinda Campos randomly award white and Asian American participants to write about a four-day period about their worst trauma or trivial topics.
They assessed physical symptoms before the writing exercise and again one month after the write sessions. The researchers found that white who wrote about trauma have fewer disease and depression symptoms in the second assessment, benefits that the Asian American group had not experienced. This group reported neither in the feelings or thoughts about the trauma.
"The One-Size-matching approach to mental health can have disappointing results," says Knowles, Assistant Professor of Psychology and Social Behavior and co-author of the study. "Mental Health Professionals should treat patients with culturally adequate therapies."
The study appears in the current issue of social and psychological personality science . Participants included 18- to 25-year-old Asian Americans of Eastern Asian, Philippine and South Asian descent. All were Englishly and had no other preferred language.
Participants who have written about traumatic events - what many have reported the death of a relatives, diseases in the family and unwanted pregnancies - reported physical symptoms from a list containing flu, breathing diseases, headaches and sleeping capabilities.
The expression of feelings and parts of trauma can actually be exhausting for Asian Americans who showed a month after writing exercises no disease symptoms, says Campos.
"In some of the better students eastern Asian societies - Japan, Korea, China - struts to maintain people, harmonious, socially contingent relationships," says Campos, assistant professor for Chicano / Latino studies and psychology and social behavior. "One way to maintain this desired harmony is not to risk the group."
What is the alternative to the treatment of Asian American patients? Yoga, Tai Chi and Meditation are the most famous examples of non-verbal voltage relief practices and maybe not surprising, all origins in Asian societies.
"Future research should consider less verbal coping agents, such as: Silent introspection, meditation or art," says Campos. "Therapists should not ask themselves: How can we make our patients? Can we change the way we treat patients to help them process the trauma in a way that are beneficial for them" , she says.
