Creating an essay for success!

Krystal n. Craicer

Author and freelance writer

Scripts can be overwhelming for many students. But a strong outline before starting writing is a surfire way to make the process much easier.

If you have never written an outline where you start? You can think of your essay as six main parts:

  • Introduction
  • thesis statement
  • main point 1
  • main point 2
  • main point 3
  • Conclusion

We will go through each of them to explain how they put their outline in a simple way that is simple and makes sense. But here is a note: we will not work on this!

Thesis statement

The first thing you want to write for your outline is your thesis statement. This is typically one or two sentences, and it acts as GPS for their entire essay. The Thesis statement tells what their attachment turns. It defines your attitude and let your reader know what their main points are.

Without a strong thesis statement, a contour can not help write a cohesive essay. Everything in your essay has to support your thesis statement.

For more information about making a strong Thesis statement, see this article on introductions.

Main points

Some people like to plan their introduction first. But I think it's easier to plan my attachment before the introduction. Normally, this gives me some good ideas to make my introduction of advantage.

In general, their essay has three main points. This is not a hard and fast rule. If you have only two very strong points to support your thesis, you may not need any third party. Sometimes you may have four or five main points, and that's okay too.

Determine your most important points that support your thesis. You can put together your topics sentences and put them in your structure. This will write something later. Otherwise, just list the topic in your outline.

Every main point has underpoints. This is the evidence to support each point. It could be research, quotes or anecdotes. How many sub-items you have, vary depending on the topic, the attachment length and the individual main point. Remember that the main points do not have to have the exact number of sub-items. Some important points are stronger than others.

How do you decide what order your main points will go? There are different thought schools.

Some authors or teachers tell them that they write their strongest, most convincing argument as the first point, followed by the second strongest and least. Other people will say that it's better if you write how they write, so start with their least strong argument.

I'm in the camp that uses the sandwich method. Use your second most convincing argument first and your strongest last. Put your weakest or shortest point in the middle. In this way they start strong and ends with a bang!

I recommend that if your attachment is time-controlled, as on the AP test, start with your strongest point if you do not run more time.

Introduction

If you have planned the meat of your essay, you can plan your introduction. The first thing you can plan is how you open your attachment. Will you use a quote or shocking fact? Maybe they use a rhetorical question. Decide how to attach your readers.

Then plan your background information or context. This offers a little more information about your topic before your work. In an essay about the permanent effects of the new deal, for example, the context issues readers what the new deal is and how it was created. In a convincing essay, why the minimum wage should be raised, your context explains what the minimum wage is and how long it is in this rate.

Conclusion

Finally, you can plan your conclusion. A good conclusion gives the thesis and binds all their points together. And it ends with something that thinks the reader and feels that the question was answered. It could provide a call-to-action, ask an evocative question or offer a prediction about the future.

The most important thing to remember for the conclusion is not to introduce new information. Conclusions do not have to take a long time. Three to four sentences are a good rule of thumb.

outline format

Here is an outline format with which you can plan your attachment. Remember, start with your thesis statement! For each main point you can have more than two evidence. It's good! Just add more sub-items in your outline.

Introduction

  • thesis statement
  • convincing hook
  • Context or Background Information

Main point 1

  • Topic Set
  • First evidence: fact, data, example or anecdote; Comment (How this supports your point what it means)
  • Second Proof: Fact, Data, Example or Anecdote; Comment

Main point 2

  • Topic Set
  • First evidence: fact, data, example or anecdote; Comment
  • Second Proof: Fact, Data, Example or Anecdote; Comment

Main point 3

  • Topic Set
  • First evidence: fact, data, example or anecdote; Comment
  • Second Proof: Fact, Data, Example or Anecdote; Comment

Conclusion

  • repeat thesis
  • summarize points
  • Fettering Final thought

This outline should be a starting place. You can add so much or so little details as you like - whatever works for you! You can also work in any order you like. I always plan and write my introductions last, but you can plan it first.
