Please note the COVID-19 resources page in the BME Graduate Guide for temporary changes to some guidelines and practices. All suggestions must be practically held in the summer 2020. The students are encouraged to use Dokuussign for forms (see details below).
The research proposal and the verbal examination includes both a written and an oral component. The written component includes sending a NIH R01 proposal (12 pages) to the pupil's dissertation committee, which is not less than two weeks before defending the same committee of the student. PhD candidates in BME are encouraged to propose in their second year of the program and at the latest at the end of the third year.
The purpose of the proposal is to progress the students towards the completion of a Ph.D. Degree in biomedical engineering. During the oral examination, the student is expected to demonstrate the following:
- identifying an important and acoustic research problem, including significant scientific knowledge of specific and related research areas. The student should be able to clearly articulate what the problem is and why it is important.
- Creating a realizable research strategy and specific plan to tackle the problem. The student should be able to clearly articulate the planned solution and results of success. The proposal and the presentation should include details of the proposed experimental, theoretical and / or calculation methods and a timeline for completing the proposed tasks.
- presentation of preliminary results. The student should demonstrate that they can carry out the proposed work with preliminary results with some of the proposed methods. The expectation is that the results of the research work are provisionally; Content that corresponds to a completed Research Paper is not expected at the time of preliminary oral examination.
