Reading a research article that is assigned as a course work

Reading skills are essential for their success at Walden. The type of reading that you do during your degree program is varies, but most of them will be the reading of journal articles based on basic research. The good news is that these items follow a general format, which makes it easier for you to navigate and locate relevant information.

Research Article Format

Title : a brief presentation of the research study, typically in 12 words or less.

Abstract : an initial summary of the article, including the purpose of the study, methods, findings and conclusions. Abstracts also contain keywords that tell you the most important topics.

Introduction : A section that delivers the background of the topic and determines the rational authors for the execution of your study. It should answer these questions: What is the current problem that needs to be addressed? What is the purpose or the goal of research?

Literature exam : A survey and analysis of current research on the topic to show the problem and the existing gaps in the literature. The literature test should justify the need for the study of the authors. It can be organized into thematic accommodation, which can scan and flood the readers as needed.

Methods : A section that exploits the design and procedures for the study. It should answer this question: How exactly was the study done? This section usually contains details on the type of study (qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods), research instrument, participants, ethical considerations and data collection and analysis steps. The authors must be sufficiently detailed so that other researchers can replicate their study.

Results (sometimes designated results) : a section containing the data generated by the research study. If the study contains quantitative elements, you will probably see numeric tables or figures. If the study involves qualitative elements, you can see portions of transcribed interviews. A mixing method study can contain a combination of data.

Discussion (sometimes referred to as conclusions) : the design of the data of the authors of the data from the result of the results / knowledge. This section should answer these questions: What does the results mean? What are the important implications? What, if available, additional research should be carried out in the future to confirm or have to confirm the results?

References : Complete publication information for each source quoted within the article.

Tips for reading an assigned research article

1. Understand what you read for

As a rule, you must read an article as a preparation for a discussion or assignment. It is then helpful to display the assignment instructions first. These instructions show how they should interact with the article. In summary, you will collect, analyze, evaluate or compare the information to something else? Are there any keywords or concepts that you should consider? know the assignment allows you to read the article with the purpose.

2. Collect instructions when you read

Approaching a research article can be overwhelming, especially if the topic is new to you. We recommend reading the article first before we dive into the full document. Each article of the article offers important indications of the study and its impact.

  • Scan the title first. based on the title, what is the article? What kind of studies did the authors have carried out?
  • Continue, read the summary. The summary gives a quick overview so that they are prepared for a full reading. Are you fascinated what you have read? What questions do you have about studying?
  • skip the opening of the section discussion / conclusions. This opening should include a brief summary of the results of the study. What surprises you? What restrictions do the authors indicate?
  • read further the discussions / conclusions and continue with the results / findings.
  • Now return to the introduction to read the full article. If you know the conclusions, restrictions and insights, gives you a deeper context to understand the study from start to finish.

3. Google way!

As you read, you can not find encounter with which you are familiar with the theory or methods used by the authors. If you have opened a tab in your browser in which you can quickly get these conditions for a better understanding.

4. Take good notes

summarize each section of the article in a sentence (in your own words), with which you enter in the margin of a hard copy or as an electronic comment of a PDF copy. With this approach you can quickly find relevant information.

Answer questions as you read:

  • Who the study (researchers and their affiliation - that is, the university or the organization in which they worked when they conducted the studies, led)?
  • why (study purpose)?
  • like (methodology)?
  • What resulted (results)?

Draw your own reactions to the study. are there vulnerabilities? Is the study valuable for your field? Is it useful for you?

Remember the assignment instructions while you read and highlight information in the article with which you can complete this task
